THE PILOT SYSTEM · metal vessels that carry souls
In ZERO ZONE, mecha are not machines. They have shells, but what sits inside is not an engine—it is a core. A core imprisons a sliver of soul—maybe from a UCDC lab, maybe from a scrap heap, maybe from someone who died yesterday.
You think you are driving it. It may think it is driving you.
PILOT DEFINITION

Definition: anthropomorphic mechanical units with a core, pilotable by Drivers, and combat-capable.
Key traits:
Not competitors:
In one line—core, shell, and field-ready—that is a competitor.
CORE · SOUL CARRIER
A compute crystal wrapped in metal. Fist-sized, nearly 12 kg.
For the mecha it is:
UCDC mass production
Aurora City core labs at scale
UCDC standard
Church retrofit
Cast Iron Church simulates mind with machine logic
Cast Iron Church
Bio-graft
Plastic Healer Hall uses bio-neural substrate
Plastic Healer specialty
Resonance birth
Zero Ring recognizes "naturally awakened" cores
Zero Ring only
Forbidden forge
Void Core fuses multiple minds into one multi-pole core
Void Core exclusive
Rust Abyss repair
Pulse-listeners revive second-hand cores from scrap
Underclass mainstream
How many souls a core can hold sets its ceiling. A sliver? Tool-class. A whole? Symbiotic. Many? …taboo.

EVOLUTION LADDER
In ZERO ZONE, mecha do not "level by grinding"—they burn compute. Each tier costs compute equal to human life. That is why UCDC does not stop the leagues—leagues are compute assembly lines.
CROSS-SOURCE LINK
CROSS-SOURCE LINK · the fourth kind
What is cross-source link?
Not remote command, not symbiotic, not cockpit. A fourth—bidirectional consciousness bleed.
The boundary between Driver and mecha blurs. The mecha acts correctly without orders. The Driver feels blunt pain where the shell is hit. After long links, some briefly cannot tell "I" from "it".
Earliest records:
Faction stances:
"The uncomputable is a BUG in the compute order." — Neumann Institute memo
"Cross-source link is proof we waited a century for: not all resonance can be zeroed by algorithm."
"Forge it into multi-pole cores—every cross-source link is fuel for fusion."
Story weight:Cross-source link is ZERO ZONE's story engine. Lin Mo's arc is not just coming-of-age—it is a living paradox watched by all three camps.
THREE DEATHS
Shell shattered, core intact.
Repairable—scrap yards or Rust Abyss.
Most common
Core loses compute sustainment; mecha "brain-dead".
Core recycled as compute bank deposit.
UCDC favorite
Soul inside core shattered in battle.
Shell intact, but it will never "wake" again.
Most feared
Elites fear the first (mecha are expensive). UCDC prefers the second (cores still squeeze compute). Only the Zero Ring weeps for the third— because only the third is true death.
